De Gruyter 'Purchase to open' ebook pilot

Supporting OA books in Business & Economics, Classical Studies and Linguistics

We are excited to offer a ground-breaking 'Purchase to Open eBook Pilot' in cooperation with Jisc.  As one of the largest independent academic publishers of open access books, we are passionate about exploring sustainable funding models for open access publishing.

De Gruyter’s 'Purchase to Open eBook Pilot' enables participating institutions to grow collections and supports the open access publication of frontlist titles in the fields of  Business & Economics, Classical Studies and Linguistics. All titles are in English, and the list is representative of our strong international author and editorial affiliations.

Funding is organized through established library infrastructures. The fee for large tier institutions is €1500 / $2000 per subject package with discounts for medium and small tiers.   All participating libraries receive guaranteed perpetual access to the selected packages. The total funding achieved from all participating institutions and consortia globally determines the number of titles published as open access.

Participation is open until 30 September 2022.  The publishing window for opening new titles from the frontlist program runs from September 2022 to August 2023.  We will confirm the results in September and announce the number of titles to be published as open access with the confirmed title list thereafter.

FAQs

What titles will be included in each package?
+

As publication dates may still change during the course of the year, the titles that will be part of the open access packages cannot yet be announced. To share as much information as possible, we have nominated series from each collection from which the titles for transformation will be selected, thus providing an indication of each collection’s future contents.

How are the titles selected?
+

Based on the funding available, titles from the nominated series will be published in open access in order of date of publication.
After the titles have been selected for open access transformation, the publisher will inform the author or editor accordingly, and will conclude a contractual addendum for open access publication. In the event that an author or editor explicitly declines open access publication, substitute titles will be included.

What criteria were used to select the series?
+

The series represent a broad selection of De Gruyter's books programme and include both long-established, traditional series as well as new series devoted to emerging research areas. The following criteria also applied:

•    This open access transformation pilot focuses on our English language publishing portfolio.
•    The nominated series publish research literature such as monographs and collected volumes.
•    The series selected comprise of cutting-edge research from an international array of scholars.

What is the open access publication fee per title?
+

The open access publication fee is 7000 euros per title (VAT excluded). A detailed overview of the services we provide for open access publications can be found here.

Which Creative Commons license will apply?
+

We aim to publish all titles under CC-BY 4.0 license. If an author wishes to apply an alternative Creative Commons license, this is also possible.
