Zeitschrift für naturforschung A:
A Modern Journal with Tradition

The Zeitschrift für Naturforschung A - A Journal of Physical Sciences (ZNA) is an international scientific journal that publishes original research papers from all areas of experimental and theoretical physics. The journal has had a tradition of excellence since its first issue in early 1946.

A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF SOME MILESTONES IN ZNA's HISTORY

JANUARY 1946+

The “Zeitschrift für Naturforschung” is launched with Arnold Sommerfeld as a member of the board of trustees. The journal provides the first means of professional communication for natural scientists in post-war Germany.

1940s+

The journal enjoys frequent contributions from outstanding scientists, including Fritz Bopp, Adolf Butenandt, Siegfried Flügge, Pascual Jordan, Heinz Ewald, Walther Bothe, Otto Hahn and Werner Heisenberg, who joins the board of trustees.
The range of content submitted by various researchers from natural sciences is overflowing. Consequently, the editorial board decides to divide the journal into two parts:
•    Part A, comprising Astrophysics, Physics and Physical Chemistry
•    Part B, dedicated to Chemistry

1950-60s+

Co-founder Alfred Klemm becomes responsible for the content, remaining so until 2007.

The journal experiences a fast rise, collecting the works of eminent minds including Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker, Gerhart Lüders, Fritz Sauter and Oskar Klein. The list of authors reads like a who’s who of modern physics in the 1950s and 1960s, yet the journal’s impact at the time is hindered since its main publication language is still German.

1973+

Part C, covering research in Biology, is added.

1985+

The final shift towards internationalisation and digitisation takes place in the 1980s, with Siegfried Großmann joining the editorial board. The journal is modernised and now accepts submissions via electronic media.

1980-1990s+

The English-language journal ZNA turns more and more international, attracting submissions from all branches of physics.

2003+

Siegfried Großmann becomes Editor-in-Chief.

2015+

The ZNA witnesses a new landmark event: the journal is taken over by De Gruyter. From then on, ZNA is fully web-based, offering an online manuscript management system and a convenient search function for the journal’s archive. Access to valuable content from the field of physical science is easier than ever before.

Submission criteria

  • SUBMIT YOUR MANUSCRIPT

  • AUTHOR BENEFITS

Articles reporting a merely marginal extension of already existing knowledge are considered unsatisfactory for ZNA.

You can easily submit your manuscript online. Please note:

... Articles need to have a tangible connection to actual physical phenomena
... Submissions must have a genuine contribution to the advancement of their topic
... Manuscripts must be written in clear and concise English

Author benefits:

... Short turnaround times
... Free print of all color figures
... A fair chance to subjects falling out of the mainstream
